Analysis and evaluation of priority habitat status 9560 * "Endemic forests with Juniperus spp." in the Güigüí Special Nature Reserve, action protocols for its recovery.
This project will act in the upper area of the Güigüí Special Nature Reserve, more concretely in the Los Hogarzos and Los Cedros Mountain. This area of the Island has a potential distribution of thermophilic forests with an important presence of junipers and cedars, as well as elements of Canary pine and sclerophyll laurel forests (heaths, peralillo tree, laurels, etc.), especially in the areas exposed to the trade winds.
At this time, only isolated specimens of these forest formations are detected in those inaccessible areas where human action, and especially the pressure of allochthonous herbivores has not arrived yet. In order to perform an analysis of the habitat 9560* conservation state in the Güigüí Special Nature Reserve, the distribution, extension and presence of different stages of age (seedlings, juveniles and adults presence) will be analized, the distance in between the different arboreal elements characteristic of this habitat, and the shrubs associated to it, the Presence of impacts and its evolution without action measures will be also analyzed. With all this, an analysis of the conservation status of the habitat can be made in order to establish the necessary measures for its conservation.
The present action, completed in March 2014, was developed through an external assistance. In the delivered report, each of the action areas is described according to the following criteria: Access to the work area, areas with substrate to carry out the plantations, environmental conditions: altitude range, slope, orientation, fogs effects, existing vegetation, potential vegetation, presence of archaeological sites and the possibility of installing anchors as occupational health and safety measures.
The document has been prepared and reviewed with the collaboration of the scientific advisers of the JBCVC, CSIC, ULL and ULPGC who have internationally recognized experience in similar projects, the minutes of the technical meeting are attached. In this sense, the guidelines to be followed in the development of actions C.1, C.2 and C.3 have been established. As to the protocols for monitoring the evolution of habitat types through action D.1, they have been defined in general terms using as reference previous experiences of the projects LIFE04NAT / ES / 64 and LIFE07NAT / ES / 759, they are included in Report A.1. However, it should be noted that during the months of February and March 2014, several field visits have been made with expert personnel from the JBCVC, ULL and ULPGC, where all the previous issues have been analyzed as well as the optimal locations to install the tracking plots and the analysis methodology.
